Have you ever dreamed of exploring one of the seven wonders of the world without breaking the bank? Well, today I’m here to tell you that it’s not only possible but also surprisingly affordable. Join me on a journey as I recount my experience of visiting the Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza for less than 100€, all from the charming city of Cairo, Egypt.
Why Cairo, you may ask? The answer is simple: it’s the nearest big city with an airport to the Great Pyramids, offering cheap accommodation and excellent connectivity. Cairo provides a tranquil retreat away from the bustling crowds, allowing travellers to immerse themselves in authentic Egyptian culture while enjoying budget-friendly options.
As my plan was to travel from Germany to India. I found a flight by Egypt airways having halt in Cairo.
My adventure began with a flight from Germany to Egypt, with a layover of 21 hours in Cairo. This layover presented several questions which needed to be answered to improve the possibilities to visit the nearby attractions, such as :
- Can I get visa to travel outside of airport during this 21-hour layover?
- Is layover enough to visit the nearby attractions (Great pyramids of Giza)?
- What is the cost of accommodation?
- What is the average cost of food?
- Important question: How can I reduce the total cost and make the trip budget friendly?
However, with a bit of research, I found answers that made this journey not only possible but also incredibly cost-effective.
Free Visa, Accommodation and Meal service
Firstly, EgyptAir offers the possibility of obtaining a free transit visa for layovers ranging from 8 to 96 hours, making it convenient for travellers to explore the city during their stopover. Additionally, EgyptAir provides complimentary hotel accommodation, meals, and ground transportation for passengers facing extended transit times in Cairo, further reducing expenses.

With visa and layover services sorted, I delved into planning my visit to the Pyramids of Giza. I allocated approximately 4 hours for the visit, which proved to be sufficient for exploring the iconic landmarks. For those interested in visiting The Egyptian Museum in Cairo, I recommend setting aside an additional 4 hours, considering travel time from Chiro airport.
